Many years ago, I saw the same thing up here in Bellingham. Well, I missed the actual attack, but there were three Coots together paddling around posts, etc on Lake Whatcom. All of a sudden there were only two; and they paddled as fast as they could to join the main flock. It was some predator in the water, presumably an Otter.

Last year, at Juanita Beach, I saw an otter grab one coot out of a raft of them. There was considerable panic among the rest of the coots.
