Perhaps the correct 'term' and outlook for the coming winter is "La Nada",
at least according to Chris Mass, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the
UW in his blog entry for September 29.
_Cliff Mass Weather Blog_ (http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/)

"La Nada" (meaning 'neutral') was even more colorfully described in a "Los
Angeles Times" article (May 5, 2012), as being "like teenagers without
rules, unconstrained, unpredictable, and sometimes most troublesome". Some of
the Pacific Northwest's worst weather events have occurred in "La Nada"
years. Yes or no, either way, the birds probably won't care one way or the
other and will just go with the flow.

Thanks to the Tweeters poster (I forget who) who clued me (us) in to
Cliff's weather blog this past Spring when the topic of the day (April 13, 2012)
and illustrated with colorful dramatic and evolving archived radar imagery
was _Bird Migration on the Coastal Radar_
(http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2012/04/bird-migration-on-radar.html)

I've been a Cliff Mass blog fan and regular ever since. Belated thanks
for the tip!
