On Monday I spent most the day rebuilding the structure that covers my
woodpile. I had to dismantle parts of it and wood was strewn around in
random piles. As I started to reassemble and stack the pile. A pacific wren
joined me. It hopped about at my feet, many times within reaching distance
and as I moved logs it would immediately pounce on spiders and other inverts
that were exposed. I was moving the whole time and the little bird seemed
quite comfortable to forage within a few feet of me. At one point I stumbled
over a log causing the brown sprite to fly up out the way of my almost fall.
It perched on the edge of the new woodpile roof and for the first time
chirped at me, as if chastising me for scaring it. There is something quite
magical about such a close encounter with a bird.
