Rob and Tweeters,

Size is not helpful in distinguishing Golden Eagles from Bald Eagles-- the
two species are nearly the same size.

Others have commented adequately on the frequency of Golden Eagles in
western WA. They are widespread but scarce, and are seen most often in and
near the mountains. In all probability, your bird was a Bald Eagle.

Outside the San Juan Islands, are there sightings of Golden Eagles in
Western WA? Saw what seemed like a oversized eagle today, and it did not
have the usual white tail and head, underside was dark with just a few
flecks of white.
