I saw a first winter Northern Shrike along the beach at Indian Island County Park in Jefferson County this morning. It sat on a driftwood stump for several minutes allowing an excellent view. It was apparently foraging on insects on the ground below, as I saw it drop and come up with one. There were also good numbers of Common Loons, Red-necked Grebes, Horned Grebes, and Common Murres on Oak Bay also.
