Thanks to the Bird Banding Lab (BBL), I just got a return from a juvenile
Red-tail I banded at Snohomish, north of Seattle, WA, on 16 December 1993.

It was found, again near Snohomish, last summer on 29 June 1012. It didn't
go too far it seems Most likely a local breeder because of the recovery
date.

So all those Red-tails you see perching along the freeway could be quite
old. The current BBL record for Red-tails is 30 years 8 months.

I am always amazed at how long birds can live in the wild.

The Bird Banding Laboratory website (www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl) lists all of
the records for longevity of banded birds under the "resources" section.
Great way to spend some time on a wet, stormy day.
