Hi all, I'm currently reading "The Wild Duck Chase", by Martin J. Smith. It's a fascinating story about the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, and a history of the one government program that puts 98% of funds raised directly into buying or leasing habitat for waterfowl, which has also created many National Wildlife Refuges . If you've ever birded Nisqually, or Dungeness Spit, you have seen the program in action. It's not just for duck hunters. They're required to buy a stamp; birders aren't. But we should. It's only $15, the cost of gas for a (short) trip these days. Can be purchased at many post offices. If you're interested in wildlife art, I recommend you read this book.
Locally, we have the Watchable Wildlife Decal Package, which supports programs for non-hunting wildlife viewers. It's $29, and can be purchased online ( google Watchable Wildlife Decal Package). While the Discover Pass gets you into wildlife areas as well as state parks, this Decal puts money into more specific projects that could benefit birders.
So, put your hard-earned money where it will actually do good for birders. Thanks, Walt Kuciej
