Today, Susan and I enjoyed a great morning of viewing migrants at our place in Skamania County, at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. From 8AM to about 11AM we had dozens of birds visible at a time, warblers were represented by ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, YELLOW, BLACK-THROATED GRAY, TOWNSEND'S HERMIT, MACGILLIVRAY'S, and WILSON'S. The most numerous species today were the HERMIT WARBLERS, we had at least six in one tree at once. During the entire time period there were calling CASSIN'S VIREOS along with silent WARBLING VIREOS. We picked out 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER, 1 GRAY FLYCATCHER, 1 HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHERS , 2 DUSKY FLYCATCHERS, and about a dozen PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS. The GRAY FLYCATCHER is only my second record for the county. One juvenile BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD and a juvenile CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD were fighting the half a dozen RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS at the feeders and plantings. There were also 8 CEDAR WAXWINGS,a couple of dozen WESTERN TANAGERS, a couple of BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, 10 RED CROSSBILLS and a dozen PINE SISKINS. The best bird of the day for me was a VEERY that stopped briefly in a Highbush Cranberry bush, the last one we had on our place was in 1974.
