Tweeters, Inlanders,

I haven't been on the list reporting sightings for a while as Tina and I
spent most of August in Kenya. It was a combination trip of a birding tour,
visiting my sister who runs a small clinic in Western Kenya, and a safari in
the Masai Mara for the wildebeest and zebra migration. We also spent 3 days
in the Kakamega Forest in Western Kenya near my sister's clinic and spent
two full mornings with local bird guides.

For the dedicated birding portion of the trip, I arranged 10 days with just
Tina and I and a guide and driver. We focused on the rift valley from Lake
Magadi near the Tanzania border up to Lake Baringo, then hooked over to
Samburu and down (or up) to Mt. Kenya. We had a great time and put together
a pretty good list of birds. We found a great local Kenyan bird safari
company - Nature's Wonderland Safaris. Joseph Mwangi, the owner / guide did
a great job. His driver is a bird guide in training in addition to keeping
the vehicle spotlessly clean (I think he washed the windows at every stop in
addition to cleaning the interior). If you are looking at a Kenya trip I
highly recommend Joseph. His contact info is:

Given all of the name changes, lumps, splits, and other taxonomy changes
that have occurred since the field guides where published, it is going to
take some time to get all of the sightings into eBird and have a 'good'
list. The rough count is 450 species.

Good Birding,

Rick
