Hey tweets, The Fill was really popping today. Warblers are coming
through in large numbers. Most are Yellow and Orange-crowned, but
there was also one gorgeous female Black-throated Gray Warbler who
delighted all who saw her, as she worked her way from the bench at Boy
Scout Pond south to the tall cottonwoods at East Point. So intent was
she on catching insects to fuel her journey south that when she
transferred from the willow tree near the bench to the cottonwood that
bends its boughs over the trail like a benediction, she almost knocked
my hat off. Luckily she spotted me at the last second and veered away
safely. This the second closest shave to a collision I've had this
summer. The first involved me suddenly doing a lane change near the
QFC, causing the police car who was already occupying that lane to
slam on his brakes. Eyes shooting flame, he pulled up beside me and
read me the riot act. My husband, who has been eagerly waiting for me
to get a traffic ticket for the past 30 years (so I will have to stop
ragging him about his tickets), thought his ship had finally come in,
but alas, a lecture was all I got. The warbler didn't even accord me
that today, much less a ticket for illegally parking myself in the
center of the trail.

At Main Pond, a Bank Swallow was wheeling overhead in the company of
many Barn Swallows. Two Northern Pintails were foraging in the pond,
along with a Green-winged Teal and a couple of Cinnamon Teals. None of
the ducks paid the least attention when a Merlin rocketed through the
Fill, scattering hordes of American Goldfinches in all directions.
High above, the uncaring face of the Moon looked down upon all this
drama without a sign. What does one day matter to a planetoid that has
witnessed billions upon billions of such days? But to a shorter-lived
birder out for a stroll on this lovely fall morning, the day was
