Yesterday, Westport Seabirds along with Vent Tours, led by Bob Sundstrom, enjoyed perhaps the warmest, smoothest pelagic that I have been on in a long time. With the ocean relatively calm, we were able to spot birds and mammals at quite a distance. Some of the highlights include the following:
a.. 1 adult Laysan Albatross
b.. 105 Black-footed Albatross
c.. 530 Northern Fulmar, which have been scarce on some of recent trips
d.. 1100 Pink-footed Shearwater
e.. 1 Flesh-footed Shearwater
f.. 1 Buller's Shearwater, surprising the low number for this time of year
g.. 2300 Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels, several large rafts
h.. 3 Red Phalarope
i.. 53 Sabine's Gull
j.. 13 sightings of South Polar Skua!
k.. 5 Pomarine Jaegers
l.. 2 Parasitic Jaegers
m.. 43 Cassin's Auklets
n.. 2 Tufted Puffins
Mammal highlights include:
a.. 18 Humpback Whale
b.. 4 Orca
c.. 1 Grampus
Leaders for Westport Seabirds were Scott Mills and myself. For complete numbers and other information about our pelagic trips, please check our website at www.westportseabirds.com
