Jeff ? starting quite a few years ago now, I?ve been trying to record the Breeding Bird Atlas codes, and looking at this data would certainly allow me to generate a bird nest life list. eBird has recently added the ability to list such codes. Breeding Bird Atlas codes are not standardized (different state atlases have used a variety of code definitions), but the eBird ones seem as good as any.

See http://ebird.org/content/ebird/about/breeding-codes

The top three of their codes ? Nest with Young, Nest with Eggs, Occupied Nest ? along with Nest Building, would be the codes you?d end up using to generate your nest life list. eBird doesn?t include it, but some other BBA codes include Used Nest, which could be used to record nests found outside of breeding season (but identifiable to species, such as Osprey and Bullock?s Oriole).

On a slightly different slant on this, one of the low-level (?Possible?) codes is S ? Singing male in suitable habitat. I?ve misused this code, recording any time I hear a bird singing (not just a vocalization, but any one of their songs). It?s very interesting to see the different seasonality of bird songs by species.

Hi Tweets,

I was wondering if anyone keeps a bird nest life list? I thought of compiling one and was just curious if others have done this.

Thanks.
