Hey tweets, the 400 volunteers from NAIOP, who chose the Fill as their
community service project this year, have gone, leaving behind an
entirely graveled Loop Trail, many pulled invasive weeds, newly
mulched gardens, and a host of other improvements. Shows what an army
can do, even in one day.

The birds have reinstated their claims to this place, having retreated
from the beehive of human activity of yesterday. It was very pleasant
sitting with the Virginia Rails at the Turtle Logs, listening to the
mom (I presume) scold the teenager for being too conspicuous and
coming out into the open. It's nice to know that other moms have the
kids-don't-listen-to-me problem.

A little flock of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS was foraging around Main Pond
this morning, the first such I have seen for fall. Nearby were several
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, also the first arrivals. An odd duck was swimming
around the Turtle Logs: it looked like a juvenile Mallard, but it had
a pointed bill. I've never seen anything like it.

Double-crested Cormorants continue to arrive daily, and at least two
Merlins seem to think the Fill belongs to them. I think so, too. -
