Gary and tweeters,

My experience with N. Pygmy-Owls in the PNW agrees with Gary's, that one can
most reliably hear or get a response to whistling from them in Sept. and
Oct. This should be an active time for adult and young pygmy-owl dispersal
from nest sites to wintering sites, although some are presumably year round
at some elevations/habitats. BNA's account of seasonal movement is pretty
sparse since the birds natural history isn't well known, even though the
species is fairly common. A newer article caught my attention, putting a
few more details out there based on closer study:

Dear Rob and Tweeters,

For some reason, early fall (September and October) is always the easiest
time to find this species. I just checked my Skagit County records; of the
78 times I've found this species here, 28 have been in September and
October. I reckon that's about 36 % of the records during only 17 % of the
year. There was one calling outside my bedroom window a few nights ago. I
don't know why this is, but they start hooting around now.

Yours truly,

behalt' deinen Dienst!"

Tonight while at a party in the woods, there was a repeated single note owl
call, which sounded to my ear to be a northern pygmy owl. Is there another
owl that I might be confusing it with and if not, is calling in September a
normal thing?

Confused in the woods
