Christine, Caren & Tweeters,

It's that time of year again when Barred Owls get a tad feisty. I heard of
one attack on a hiker by a Barred Owl last week on Bainbridge Island.

One theory as to why now is related to the length of daylight. Presently,
we are experiencing about 12 1/2 hours of daylight. This is the same amount
as mid-March -the time when Barred Owls are on eggs. The theory is that it
is a hormonal thing, possibly exacerbated by the fact that the young from
this year are now dispersed and trying to find unclaimed territory, or exist
as a floater in occupied territories. The adult residents will call not only
with the "Who cooks for you" call, but also a prolonged "whoooo-ah" call to
announce that a territory is occupied.

Watch your backs!

I too have started hearing the Barred Owls in the local woods. I have been
hearing them at 0500 for about the last two weeks. I don't know whether
they are hooting during the night also, but would assume so.
