Hello Bill,

I observed an adult hybrid flicker at Luther Burbank, MI about a year ago.

What is the current range of the yellow-shafted northern flicker? I have read that it is the eastern and midwestern US with yellow-shafted/red-shafted hybrids appearing along the eastern edge of the Rockies from SE Alaska to northern Texas.

The reason I ask is that in June of 2011 , I photographed a male yellow-shafted/red-shafted hybrid (red malar, red "V" on the back of its neck) at the Pt. Edwards walkway and nearby Willow Creek fish hatchery in Edmonds. Today (Friday, 9/21/12) I may have met that flicker's parents, as I photographed a female red-shafted (no red "V") and a male yellow-shafted (black malar, red "V") flying and perching together in the same location.

Is the yellow-shafted male way out of its range or has its range shifted west over the years?

Bill Anderson; Edmonds, WA. USA
