The?saga of the fishing pier mystery bird coninues.? I am fairly certain?the bird I?photographed today standing on the foot of the marina breakwater?opposite the fishing pier is the same bird I have previously photographed and identified as first a juvie marbled murrelet (based on plumage), then as?a juvie pigeon guillemot (based on head shape). ? I now wonder if?the mystery bird ?is a juvie common murre, based on the dark line descending in a reverse crescent shape from the?rear of its eye.???The illustrations in my Sibley's show the common murre as gray, where this mystery bird is?brown.
?
Monday was?the first time I have seen and photographed it?out of water.?? I hope it remains?in the?vicinity of the pier throughout the winter so I can see its mature plumage, ?which may help me make a final, correct identification.?? The mystery bird is the only avian action?in progress at the fishing pier if?any of you?want to?stop by and?to help me identify it.
