Tweets, reading the last post reminded me that I saw a Green Heron between
the bridges (4th and State) in Olympia last Sunday afternoon. We were
watching the salmon dart back and forth under the bridge when I saw it fly
across to the east side of the opening between the bridges, where Cesspool
(AKA Capitol) Lake drains into the Sound. It moved between the large rocks
along the edge, searching for what I thought would be some of the numerous
fry that were skulking around. It slowly but surely moved toward the viewing
platform, and along and onto the concrete support rampart where there must
have been a few hundred fry warming themselves. I watched and waited for
the first piercing stab into the shoal that surrounded it's feet. But there
was none. The heron was standing almost perfectly still just twitching it's
head every so often. As I didn't have binos and was in the middle of the
platform, I moved slowly to the end that jutted out a little, until the
heron was within about 20 feet of me. It was oblivious to me and all the
other people on the platform, busily snatching insects in mid air that were
being blown/sucked under the bridge (which had a steady breeze going under
it) and along the concrete side walls.
