With threatening, occasionally dripping skies, and a chilling wind, Michael
Schrimpf and I made a somewhat abbreviated tour through the park this
morning. It was definitely not a 'birdy' day, but there were some new birds
to make it worthwhile.

A Barn Owl was perched on top of the owl box by the SHA building but no
evidence of owls at the tower. Wilson's Snipe were calling from the West
Meadow. Virginia Rail were vocal from Frog Pond and from the wetland
adjacent the rugby field. Hundreds of American Coot, mostly at Pontiac Bay.
Also at Pontiac Bay was a Common Loon.

At Promontory Point, a pair of Pileated Woodpecker flew to a tree by the
road while a Band-tailed Pigeon was calling from the treetops. A Pacific
Wren scolded us mercilessly after we practically stepped on it!

Finally, Common Yellowthroats have shown up, in good numbers. Barn Swallows
were present in small numbers at the N end, while the Violet-greens were
often hunting, at the S end, in a very compact group; must have been an
insect swarm aloft. A Lincoln's Sparrow emerged from the wetlands;
Lincoln's have been hard to get recently. Many singing White-crowned
Sparrow; songs of some sounded like a cross between pugetensis and
gambelii.

For the day 61 species; with COYE, COLO and BARS as new, up to 92 species
for the year.
