Seven of us braved the mist at Joint Base Lewis-McChord's Eagles Pride golf
course Thursday and had a couple of birding highlights:



A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, likely the same bird we've seen the past three
months, was still located at the same shrubby area at the power-line
corridor. We initially heard a call note, and an adult male bird was soon
right in front of us.



We heard a CASSIN'S VIREO sing part of its song from high atop a
Douglas-fir. After I played a Cassin's song so the group could recognize it,
the bird flew down to the same shrubby area we found the MacGillivray's
Warbler, and proceeded to sing, as if on territory - everyone had a good
view of this species, which we'd not recorded on previous trips this year.
It was a "lifer" for two of us.



Many chickadees, both Chestnut-backed and Black-capped, as well as Brown
Creepers and Red-breasted Nuthatches were in the large Douglas-firs along
the road that borders the 16th hole (Blue course). The lake we normally
visit only had a few Mallards and one male Wood Duck (eclipse plumage). All
the swallows, except Barn, seemed to have move on, which is pretty much the
case at my home in Roy.



Last week, Eagles Pride held the first annual Green Golf tournament and
environmental summit - and had a good turnout for this initial event. Folks
from the environmental community (WDFW, recycling folks, etc.) were paired
with two soldiers or airmen from JBLM in each foursome. Highlight of the day
was the presentation of Audubon International's Certification to the course
(and the JBLM base commander). It's the 1000th course to be so designated
(worldwide), and only the second US Army course. Planning for next year's
event is already taking place. I hope they keep the 8-inch cups (versus the
normal 4-inch cups) as part of the golf tournament - what an ego-booster!



Looking forward to ducks returning to the lakes on the course.
