Just a add on. The Collins Guide is also published by Princeton Field
Guides as "Birds of Europe (Second Edition)". I was a bit confused last
year when I thought they were two different books.

It is indeed an excellent field guide (although I've never had the pleasure
of birding somewhere where I could actually find it useful), but there are
significant differences to the way it portrays birds than Sibley's. Sibley,
for instance gives a pretty standard set of drawing's for all species (Male
Adult, Juvenile, Adult In Flight, Juvenile In Flight) while Collins Guide
varies extensively in what it shows. I just spot compared Sibley and
Collins plates of Grebes and Loons that appear in both books (although
under different names, Collins does not show any of these species in
flight, which is useful information. The Collins Guide has much more
beautiful and lifelike drawings, however, and portrays variations (such as
downy young) that Sibley does not.
