Hello, tweets.

At the Anacortes ferry landing there is a thriving colony of Purple Martins in boxes on pilings. Very observable, and although at spotting scope distance, they may come in and fly around over you.

Even more fun is the big colony of Pelagic Cormorants on the pilings to the east of the eastern ferry dock. You have to get on the ferry to get close to them, but you are very close and can look down on nests and eggs from the upper deck for great photo ops. The easiest and cheapest way to see them would be to be a walk-on passenger to the nearest island and back. There are lots of fledged young and some large young still in downy plumage, but I presume this will change rapidly.
