Peanut Butter Suet



We have two ways of fixing the peanut butter, one is for the peanut butter log and the other is for the suet feeder. For both we use the 5 lb. buckets of Adam's Crunchy Peanut Butter that we buy at Costco. We initially drain some of the oil from the top of the peanut butter.



For the peanut butter log we add rolled oats, bird seed and corn meal, and mix it up until the mixture is stiff. There is no set amount to add. It depends on the consistency of the mix. We add about 1/4 cup of each mix it all up, add 1/4 cup more of each, mix it up, check to see if the mix will stand up by itself without slumping. Keep doing this until the mix is stiff. If you put it in the log and it sloughs out then we add more. The log is about 4" in dia. and about 18" long with four holes spaced at different levels around it. The holes are 1 to 1-1/2" in. in dia. and the same dimension deep with small pegs, ~ 1" long, just below the hole.



For the suet, we save the plastic forms from any commercial suet we have bought and use them to put the following recipe in.



1 cup lard (it is convenient to use the 1# pkg of Morrell lard)

1 cup crunchy peanut butter

Melt this in the top of a double broiler. Then stir in:

1/3 cup or less sugar

1 cup flour (part white, part whole wheat)

2 cups rolled oats

2 cups yellow cornmeal

Then add a handful of millet and sunflower seeds



Pour this mix into the forms, cool and store in freezer. This makes enough to fill three of the suet forms.


All the birds that come into our yard love this suet over any that we buy. Even have Pileated Woodpeckers at the feeder. We attach a board vertically below the suet cage to give the woodpeckers something to brace their tails against. It is good to have a source of water like as bird bath as the peanut butter makes them thirsty.
