Yesterday afternoon a friend introduced me to the Union Bay
bald eagle nest. Immediately upon our arrival one of the eagles
flew from the waterfront over the swamp and landed in a tree
near the nest tree. The eagle opened its wings to dry.
After a while it moved to another tree close by and then
perched high in the nest tree, still drying its wings. After
30-45 minutes the eagle flew out across the swamp
toward the water.

Half of the nest has recently fallen part way down the tree,
with smaller chunks even further down. No observable
nest sticks near the bottom of the tree.

There is a new fence around the property with a gate
and a large proposed land use sign which states the
conference center land is planned for full subdivision
from one parcel into 82 parcels and 7 tracts of land
in an "environmentally critical area". The comment
period for the environmental review by Seattle Dept
of Planning and Development ended 12/15/13 but
may be extended to 12/29/13.
