Here's my monthly report for those of you who like to follow the birds being seen at Lake Sammamish State Park.



Comments: Sharon Aagaard and Stan Wood birded with 7 others at Eastside Audubon's monthly bird walk at Lake Sammamish State Park on December 18, 2013, from 8 am to noon. Light rain, steady drizzle, more rain and a few seconds of hail, 3 mph winds, with temps 43-44 degrees F. HIGHLIGHTS: 2 SWANS (flying too high to identify the species), which is a new park bird for us. Enjoyed seeing a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER tending wells on a deciduous tree; a very, very wet COOPER'S HAWK; a MERLIN blasted by and perched; and 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS. The red and black parrott-type bird has not been seen for a couple months. The 3 Swan Geese are still there (since last Sep). We didn't see them today, but on two previous occasions, Stan has seen AMERICAN DIPPER in Issaquah Creek, and 2 were seen there during Eastside Audubon's CBC on 12/14. 46 species for the day; 118 species for the year. The next bird walk is JANUARY 10. No pre-registration, just show up depending on your mood or the weather. Since this is a state park, a Discover Pass is necessary to park ($10 daily, $30 annual). We meet in the large parking lot to the left just inside the main park entrance (not the boat launch entrance).
