I drove down to Humboldt County earlier in the week to see this mega-rarity. Roads were bare and dry through the Siskiyous and the bunting is appearing quite regularly throughout the day. I arrived early afternoon and saw it within half an hour. As long distance chases go, this one was relatively easy. If the bird, which was found December 12th sticks around after holiday obligations, and if the Redwood Highway remains bare and dry, this is a fairly easy and satisfying chase. It was a 48 hour trip, which included time to bird the fantastic Arcata Marsh.

If you want updated information at any time, Google Rob Fowler and Little Bunting. Rob is the Humboldt County birder who is keeping track of the continuing sightings. He is very responsive to email RFIs. John Pushock has directions and a map of the bird's specific cow field location at his ABA rare bird blog.
