Nice seeing you at Ediz Hook today, Cara. I, likewise, did not find any of
the rarities either, but the day after the Port Angeles CBC when Bob
Boeklheide reported the two Short-tailed Shearwaters, etc., I did see a
shearwater, presumably one of the Short-taileds but very far out among the
throngs of gulls. It flew like a shearwater but the odd thing was that some
of the gulls were chasing it -- a behavior I?ve not seen before. The only
Long-billed Murrelet I?ve ever seen was some 20+ years ago on a small farm
pond in Seneca County, Ohio! Occasionally, juries of this species ?wander?
far from their normal range and end up in the Midwest on small lakes or
ponds. Happy New year to all and good birding. . . .
