Today Barbara and I joined Penny and David Koyama for their second try at
the Red-flanked Bluetail at Queen's Park in Vancouver, B.C. Penny located
the bird within five minutes of our arrival 100 meters north of the parking
lot, west of the play structure where the bird has been seen. We could see
the rainbow on the restroom building and the play area directly east of
where we found the bird. It's a good-looking flycatcher with reddish sides
and the tail beginning to show dark blue. We observed the bird for nearly
ten minutes before it withdrew into a large Western red cedar. Then we
drove to Burnaby Lake about 10-15 minutes away and found the White-winged
Crossbills in a large tree on the Conifer Loop near the Nature House on
Piper Drive.

After a sandwich and coffee we went to Boundary Bay at 72nd St and found
goodly numbers of Short-eared Owls and Northern Harriers hunting, plus
Snowy Owl, Rough-legged Hawk, and Northern Shrike. Even the rain held off
most of the day to help make it a great trip!
