Today, 02/09/2013, Bob Schmidt and I did a whirlwind tour of Snohomish &
King Counties, trying for the three major rarities: Rusty Blackbird,
Prairie falcon & Golden Eagle. We succeeded finding the Rusty Blackbird
first thing in the morning at WA 530 and 7th Ave NE, Arlington, WA, despite
the drizzle and foggy conditions. We dipped on the Prairie Falcon on Eide
Rd. in Stanwood but did find a Short-eared Owl and five Greater Yellowlegs
as consolation prizes. At Thomie Road off of Marine Dr. in Stanwood, we saw
two Snowy Owls. Off of Boe Rd. and 90th Avenue NW, Stanwood, we saw an
estimated 3000 Snow Geese. The Golden Eagle was easily seen at Sikes Lake
in King County. It was perched in a snag and the original finder of the
bird, Mike Hamilton, had it in his scope as we pulled-up on Carnation Farm
Road(?). Another great day of birding despite the not-so-pleasant weather.
