In my opinion, since the dike was breached birding Spencer Island has been mostly disappointing. It no longer has the shorebirds, passerines and woodpeckers - certainly not in the numbers from earlier years. Great Horned Owls used to nest there, but I do not believe they do anymore: love to be proved wrong. It still has Eastern Kingbirds in season and now White-winged Crossbills. The days of Yellow-throated Vireo have passed!
I regularly bird Everett STP from the road into Spencer Island. That is still productive and worth checking. Thousands of ducks still there today even though hunting has stopped. Must be good food for them.
Additionally seen over the Everett STP today were 2 Tree Swallows. And much thanks to Kevin Moore for finding and reporting the White-winged Crossbills. They looked splendid in the excellent light today.
