The recent rediscovery of the Havillah Great Gray Owl(s) has apparently brought forth a number of birders
actively seeking to add it to their county/annual/life list. While it is appreciated that the reports of the
birds are made known on Tweeters, there are undoubtedly a lot more birders that aren?t reporting their actions,
specifically concerning the use of playback, and this concerns me.

This owl is being targeted by many individuals, who on their own are probably not harassing the bird, but
collectively are most likely having a significant impact on the bird?s routine as this is nesting season for
them. The use of playback repeatedly against the same individual bird over a short period of time constitutes
harassment.

A little sensitivity and respect is due to these birds. They will be vocal and visible, given patience. The
best way to ensure that there isn?t a future generation for others to enjoy is to continue to harass them
through the use of playback.

While I don?t wish to discourage the reporting of these birds via Tweeters or eBird, I most strongly wish to
discourage the use of playback targeted specifically towards this individual bird.
