Edmonds CBC: Dec.
22, 2012

Species seen/heard:
123 on the count day plus 2 during the count week

Individual birds:
42,826

Participants: 68
field observers on 26 teams plus 14 feeder/yard observers

The 2012
count easily surpassed the 28-year average counts of 105 species and 27,096
individual birds mainly due to an increase in participation, particularly by
experienced birders. High or near high
counts were recorded for 20 and 2 species,
respectively. A list of these species
will be posted on the Pilchuck Audubon Society?s web site in the near
future. The main species were Snow Goose
(4913), Cackling Goose (943), Pacific Loon (78), Eurasian Collared Dove (35),
Pine Siskin (3198) and Red Crossbill (163).
Although not on this list, the Anna?s Hummingbird and Townsend Warbler
have been seen in increased numbers in the past 10 years.

Sixteen rare or uncommon species were also seen (details also to be
posted on PAS?s web site). Eight of
which were seen/heard in less than 10 of 28 years: Redhead (4), Cinnamon Teal
(3), Ring-necked Pheasant (1), Common Raven (1), Ancient Murrelet (2 CW),
Savannah Sparrow (5), Red-Crossbill (163), and Common Redpoll (5). Notable misses were the Brant?s Cormorant,
Brandt, California Quail (a small population persists in Mukilteo but was not seen), Marbled
Murrelet, Barn Owl, and the Great Horned Owl.
The following four waterfowl species seem to be declining at least in
our count area: Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Ring-necked Duck, and the Black Scoter.
The efforts of all observers is certainly appreciated and we look forward to seeing their continued participation.Duane KarnaCompiler
