On my way home from SE Washington, I spent the morning in Wahkiakum County
hoping to add some new birds to my county list. Wow.did I succeed. At
Julia Butler Hanson NWR, I scoped a loon, that I'm fairly certain was an
ARCTIC LOON. It was in the river, at the end of Steamboat Slough Road. I
first saw it through my bins, and initially said Pacific, but noticed quite
a bit of white on the flanks. Got my scope out, and confirmed that the loon
had extensive white on the flanks, and no chin-strap. I watched it for
about 3 minutes, but then it flew upstream, and I lost it. This was the
only loon I saw all morning.



On the same road, I had an immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK perched in a tree,
with a Red-tailed hawk two trees over for comparison.



On Puget Island, I found a CLARK'S GREBE at the intersection of Ostervald
and Cross Dike Roads. It was all by itself, with a bright yellow bill,
black above the eye, with just a little smudging, and more white on the
flanks.
