Hi Tweeters,

Finding no big days for Cowlitz County recorded at Washington Birder
website, Becky Kent, Rachel Perry and I decided to do our birding outing
yesterday (1/20/13) as a big day. We made no stunning finds, but had a very
nice day for both birds and weather.

Lake Sacajawea hosted 2 EURASIAN WIDGEON and the larger than usual gull
concentration there held single HERRING, THAYER'S & WESTERN GULLS.

There were 2 RUDDY DUCKS at the LongviewSTP.

We found the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at Willow Grove as well as a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at a feeder there.

At he Mint Farm we added VIRGINIA RAIL as well as an impressive flock of 40
WESTERN MEADOWLARKS.

We found an AMERICAN DIPPER at the Kalama Falls Fish Hatchery. The Port of
Kalama area was a bit of a disappointment with the only highlight being
another flock of 24 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS.

We finished the day at the Woodland Bottoms and found a flock of 20 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and did well on raptors here including a SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. We also enjoyed a PEREGRINE FALCON stooping
on a pair of MEW GULLS, but going dinnerless. Just after sunset a
SHORT-EARED OWL made an appearance at the end of Guild Road. An attempt to
add other owls to our list in the bottoms proved futile.

We returned to our Kelso meeting spot after 11.5 hours of birding with a
list of 83 species and memories of an enjoyable day.
