This morning I went out into the wet looking for the Gyrfalcon. I
discovered that I had forgotten a towel when just starting to look at
the falcon. Serendipity was with me as I remembered that I had a sponge
towel packed in the swimming kit I keep in my car. I discovered that
the sponge worked wonderfully, much better than a cotton towel. The
reasons for this are: the sponge needs to be damp to work so even if it
gets soaked in a downpour, all you have to do is squeeze it out and it's
ready to work again. You don't need to wipe with it, just blot, so
there is much less chance streaking and, more importantly, scratching
lens surfaces. It both blots up droplets and defogs very well. It is
relatively small; it and its tube carrying case will easily fit in a
large coat pocket.
