HI Kelly et al.:
This thread reminds me of what happened here at Bainbridge Island at
Eagle Harbor. At the mouth of the harbor was the Wycoff Creosote Company
who preserved piling for nearly a century. During the 1980's shellfish
and bottom fish were found with tumors caused by the creosote.
Multi-lingual warning signs went up telling people NOT to eat the
shellfish/bottom fish. Around 1985 I was home on Summer break from college
and I walked down to the public dock in Winslow. I noticed an old-timer
fishing for flounder from the dock. I pointed out the warning signs to
him and he said: "That's okay, I cut out the tumors and eat the rest".
