Wednesday morning I walked part of my prairie sparrows transect on the West Rocky
Prairie Wildlife Area mounded prairie (near Tenino, Thurston Co.). Not a single sparrow!
All the Savannahs and Vespers were either hiding or have departed.

However... The resident Northern Harrier pair has successfully brought off a brood. On
June 21st I saw the female in flight carrying prey to the nest, and to go to ground on
Beaver Creek flats about where I flushed her from Reed Canarygrass on April 25th.
Today, I saw two juveniles. One I flushed from under an old apple tree, and the other I
flushed nearby from a trough on the prairie between the mounds. For some time after I
saw one of both in flight over the prairie and Beaver Creek flats.
