Hi Tweets,

In the last several weeks we have added Purple Martin (code 3),
Western Kingbird (code 5), and Willow Flycatcher (code 2) to the
Edmonds year list. We are up to 152 species for the year.

This morning Ted Peterson saw a fist of fall migration Least Sandpiper
in the marsh. I couldn't find it at noon, but I did see a Purple
Martin on the utility lines along the west side of the marsh. A couple
of Belted Kingfishers were about, along with the Barn and Violet-green
Swallows. Ted also noted about 15 Heermann's Gulls, finally, from the
public pier. I counted 8 at rest on the south breakwater at mid-day.
After having seen one on the waterfront in late May, I figured the
summer population was going to return early. But it held off until
now. There weren't a lot of birds on the Sound but it was a three
auklet view from the pier. Panning once with the scope turned up about
15 Rhinoceros Auklets, one Pigeon Guillemot, and one Marbled Murrelet.

A week or so back I saw both a male and female Common Yellowthroat
near the marsh. Although they did not have bills full of bugs, the
presence of both suggests that they may be nesting in the area.

Good birding,

Carol Riddell
