Ed and Tweeters,



No, the northward range expansion of Scrub-Jays has not stopped, although it
is slow and steady. Scrub-Jays nested in Bellingham for the first time last
year. They have not yet nested in BC, but sightings around Vancouver have
become more frequent in the last decade, and there is one long-staying bird
(since last September) in New Westminster right now. I expect we will
record our first BC nesting record within the next 3 or 4 years.



They are also expanding their range westward into places like Aberdeen and
towns along the Oregon coast, and eastward into places like Bend, Oregon,
where they were not seen 20 years ago. The range expansion of this species
deserves our continuing attention.

Hi all,



About the time people started getting really tired of hearing new Scrub-Jay
reports on Tweeters, we suddenly began to not see Western Scrub-Jays here in
accustomed locations on Beacon Hill and in surrounding communities.



Has the northward march faltered? I can't say I'd be in the least bit
disappointed, but does anyone have any insights into what's going on with
this species?
