Michael,
Birds of Europe, by Mullarney, Svensson, Zetterstrom, and Grant is considered by many to be one of the best field guides. (Some folks go so far as to say it's the best field guide, of any kind, thus far published.)

May all your birds be identified,
Denis DeSilvis

Subject: [Tweeters] European birding book

I am heading to Germany and nearby countries this summer. Do you have a
recommendation for a bird guide book that has a balance of being
informative but reasonably sized?
