Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday March 14. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
503-233-3976.

The Northeast Portland OVENBIRD was seen again March 9. SNOWY OWLS continue
at the South of the South Jetty of the Columbia River. On March 8 a HORNED
PUFFIN flew northward past the North Jetty of the Siuslaw River. The Toledo
TUFTED DUCK continues to be seen.

Shorebirds, mainly GREATER YELLOWLEGS, BLUE-WINGED and CINNAMON TEAL,
CASPIAN TERNS and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS are now increasing as the migration
continues. PURPLE FINCHES are now becoming more conspicuous. The first
OSPREY back at its nest was seen near Amity March 10. SANDHILL CRANES are
peaking on Sauvie Island.

Herring are now spawning in Yaquina Bay. This attracts large numbers of
birds, especially all three scoters, scaup, and goldeneyes. The wintering
LONG-TAILED DUCKS continues there. On March 7 about 100 KITTIWAKES were in
the bay and another 100 were at Seal Rocks State Park, along with two ROCK
SANDPIPERS. A PALM WARBLER was at the Hatfield Science Center March 12.
Seven ROCK SANDPIPERS were at Depoe Bay March 12. A SNOW BUNTING was on
Barview Jetty at Tillamook Bay March 9. That day 152 GREAT EGRETS were in
the Coquille River Valley.

On March 10 a PINE GROSBEAK was above Cooper Spur on the east side of Mt.
Hood. The NORTHERN SHRIKE and SAY?S PHOEBE continue at Powell Butte Park in
Gresham. On March 10 a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE visited a feeder in Dayton. The
Alvadore MOCKINGBIRD continues. A SAY?S PHOEBE was near Pleasant Hill March
7. A small group of CHIPPING SPARROWS were near Grants Pass March 8.

On March 9 an adult male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and three MEW GULLS were at
McNary Dam near Hermiston. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was near Redmond March 13.

That?s it for this week.
