On the subject of Yellow Shafted Flickers; for years I have had some of the hybrids, with a dash of the Yellow Shafted. Two days ago, I discovered a female fighting with another female Flicker, whose underwings were decidedly bright yellow/gold. I could not get good looks at the head of this beauty, but I am certain it would be a hybrid. I have kept watch for her, but since the one who won the fight, also won feeding and the male; I dunno if the Yellow/hybrid will be coming back around...The sad thing is I got really busy and had not filled my feeders.

As we were about to head out the door to do our grocery shopping this morning, we were surprised to see a Yellow Shafted Flicker ravaging our suit. This was a new bird for our back yard so it created quite a stir in our house ? you know, ?the pop your eyeballs out of your head, wipe them on your shirt, return them to their sockets and look again? moment. Besides the Yellow Shafted Flicker we had numerous Yellow Finches, 3 Red Shafted Flickers, a Pine Siskin, a pair of Purple Finches, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Chestnut-backed Chickadee and masses of Juncos ? all within the 15 minutes we were looking. Spring?ain?t it grand!
