I found a western subspecies Palm Warbler at KVI Beach this morning, a first
record for Vashon. At first it was atypically in Douglas Fir and Pacific
Madrone where the beach meets the bluff line north of the pond. It then
flew down into the driftwood and beach grass line more usual for this
species. Later, with Sue Trevathan, we noted it again in the same Pacific
Madrone and then followed it from a distance as it eventually worked through
the beach wood/grass all the way back toward the entrance to the area.
Originally it was on its own but then seemed to associate with the Savannah
Sparrows foraging in the beach grass.



Also present was a Greater Yellowlegs, a Semipalmated Plover and half a
dozen each Western and Least Sandpipers. Also calling was a first of season
Olive-sided Flycatcher up in the woods above the bluff behind the pond.



Finally, Purple Martins were checking out the gourds and houses by the Tramp
Harbor fishing pier. .
