Today, Barry Woodruff and I had a great time today birding the Pierce NWR in Skamania County, as part of the volunteer crew conducting a Breeding Bird Atlas on the refuge. Migrants were conspicuous and vocal and I picked up several first of the season county birds including: WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, HOUSE WREN, WESTERN TANAGER, HERMIT WARBLER and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. This beautiful refuge is closed to the public and volunteering is about the only way a person can visit here other than a few led field trips offered each year through the Columbia Gorge Refuge Stewards. The next hike will be on Saturday, May 18th starting at 8AM, Space is limited, so please reserve your spot early. For reservations contact Eric Anderson (360) 887-4106 or eric_anderson at fws.gov Wilson Cady
