Subject: JBLM (Lewis) + Roy - 5-19-2013 - Bullock's Oriole, and a bunch of
other stuff



Tweeters,

Nine of us (me plus 8 WOS-ers) toured JBLM (Lewis) today and struck gold in
the form of three singing male (plus one female) BULLOCK'S ORIOLES at
American Lake - the first orioles recorded on a trip I've led to JBLM. We
had excellent views of these birds, which were found just to the left of the
fishing dock in the cottonwoods. The county listers on the trip had a good
day, with one of us getting 10 new Pierce County species, for her new total
of 157. Our species count for today: 72. (Note: when I got back home after
dropping off folks back near I-5, my wife said we had had a RING-NECKED
PHEASANT feeding along the blackberries out back - the first of these here
in 3 years.)



Many more flycatchers (WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS - but
still no Willow Flycatcher), and one more LAZULI BUNTING than yesterday's
two. In addition, WARBLING VIREOS were seen at OP-10 as well as at Chambers
Lake. The swallows weren't as concentrated as yesterday, but we did manage
to garner the now usual six species.



Starting from American Lake, we then went to Range Control, down the East
Gate Road to the C-5 fuselage, south to the Range Road, and then toured the
warbler trap along the east side of Training Area (TA) 4, west along Story
Road to OP-10 sign, and back to OP-8. After lunch there (with good views of
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD and the buntings), we went to the Muck Creek bridge,
Lewis Lake, Brandenburg Marsh, Chambers Lake, and ended at Avian Acres in
Roy.



American Lake: BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN, STELLER'S JAY,
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, EVENING GROSBEAK, MALLARD, EUROPEAN STARLING, WOOD
DUCK, BALD EAGLE, BULLOCK'S ORIOLE, PINE SISKIN, DARK-EYED JUNCO, COMMON
MERGANSER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, and GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL.



I'll skip detailing the rest except to list the species, other than
duplicates of the above, seen along the tree-line on the east side of TA 4:

WILSON'S WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, EVENING GROSBEAK,
WESTERN TANAGER, PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CASSIN'S VIREO,
HOUSE WREN, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, SAVANNAH SPARROW, PURPLE
FINCH, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.



The three male LAZULI BUNTINGS were located on the slope below OP-8 (two)
and just to the east of OP-8 on the prairie side of the road (one). Outside
of JBLM, we picked up BREWER'S BLACKBIRD near the Roy post office, and RED
CROSSBILL, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and BAND-TAILED PIGEON at Avian Acres.
