I took a friend who is completing her Audubon May Marathon fundraiser
around to some of my favorite sites today. We started early this
morning at the Fobes Road wetlands in Snohomish, just south of U.S. 2.
We did not find bitterns but there was a SORA calling and we saw
several EASTERN KINGBIRDS along the river. At the Monroe prison farm
ponds there were two TRUMPETER SWANS, one with a neck collar,
apparently placed by Martha Jordan. There were lots of swallows but no
sign of the Black Terns that Josh Adams and Ann Marie Wood found on
Wednesday.

We drove out Norman Road from Silvana to Boe Road, ending at the
Nature Conservancy property. We searched carefully but did not find
any Whimbrels or other shorebirds in any of the fields. We had to go
to Camano Island to find 8 WHIMBRELS lingering in the fields around
Rekdal Road. The surprise bird of the day was a single LARK SPARROW on
the pavement of Rekdal Road. This appears to be a new bird for Island
County. At English Boom we were able to locate several PURPLE MARTINS
in spite of the spraying that has taken place to eliminate mosquitoes.
There were a few more Whimbrels at this location on today's extensive
mud flats.

We finished up at Eide Road where we found 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and a
pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL in the ponds. We had lots of good birds and
nice weather as the predicted rain never caught up with us. In fact,
we had more sun than clouds. We did not encounter any other birders at
any sites we visited. Where were you all?? I hope you were out at
other sites enjoying great birds and good weather.
