Subject: [Tweeters] Red-throated Loon in Freshwater Off Breeding Ground?

Perhaps this is nothing new to WA birders but it is to me. I know that
Red-throated Loons breed on freshwater lakes in the Arctic but until a few
weeks ago, I?ve never seen one one a presumably freshwater river in
migration. On 10/22/13, I photographed this juvenile RTLO on the Wa?atch
River in Neah Bay, Clallam Co. The area was at the eastern end of the
river. I assume that part of the river is freshwater or is it brackish? I
read where RTLOs prefer saltwater when not breeding so is this unusual to
see one in freshwater or brackish water? I?m grateful for any input.
Thanks. Here?s the link to the photo.
