After a cold and foggy morning when birds seemed relatively absent from the usual farmland spots (even the Trumpeter Swans hadn?t appeared in the Gate's Field corn stubble by 8:30), I headed out from the house in the afternoon for a neighborhood walk. At least the fog had lifted a bit! It continued to be slow, but 57 swans, 450 Cackling Geese, and 1 juv. Snow Goose grazed the corn stubble. The hedgerows were enlivened by only a few Song Sparrows and Towhees until I reached the Hay Barn on Schmuck Rd. when a lone sparrow flushed to the roadside fence. At first I thought Lincoln?s Sparrow, but they seldom alight in the open on fence wires, and when I got it in the scope, found it to be a beautiful adult American Tree Sparrow, complete with rufous top, brownish sides to the upper breast with a black dot in the center, and a dark upper and yellow lower beak. It was a very welcome sight and brightened a rather drab day!
