hello everyone,

i wrote a story about an interesting SCIENCE paper that i had the pleasure
to make a small contribution to and i thought you all might like to read
it. this study has done something new; the authors managed to tease apart
the contributions to migration from "instinct" and social learning. the
authors studied captive-bred whooping cranes that now live in the wild.
these birds are being intensively monitored, so there is a huge amount of
data available for analysis. the study found that young birds learn their
migratory routes from older, more experienced birds and that migrating
alongside more experienced birds improves the migratory performance of
young birds:
