A chilly morning (48 F) and a full moon to start, but the birds were up
early and were very active all morning. More transition to the new season
as migrants produced some unusually high numbers.
Hooded Merganser and Green-winged Teal were new for the season.At least one
Barn Owl hunting early over the west meadow; another sighting likely the
same birdSeveral dozen Vaux's Swift, mostly over Promontory Point.A
Pileated Woodpecker was trashing a stump on the Point and another called
from distance.A Merlin was sunning itself near the fins.A late Willow
Flycatcher was bug-hunting in Kingfisher Basin and a Hammond's Flycatcher
was gleaning bugs with the warblers.A large flock of Steller's Jay were
moving around the boat ramp area.Cedar Waxwings were trying out the
Hawthorn berries which are now abundant.Seven warbler species
(Orange-crowned, C Yellowthroat, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, BT Gray, Townsend's
and Wilson's) with OCWA being the most abundant with nearly a dozen
birds.At least a dozen Lincoln's Sparrows, in several locations, not at all
shy.
